In computing, DOC or doc (an abbreviation of “document”) is a proprietary extension for a file name traditionally used for documentation in text format, on a wide variety of operating systems.
In the 1980s, WordPerfect used DOC extension as a proprietary format. Then, in the 1990s, Microsoft has also used the extension DOC files for their processing software Microsoft Word.
On Palm OS, DOC is short for PalmDoc, a completely different file format used for text files such as digital books.
Alternatives
The proprietary doc for Word causes problems for users because of its non- interoperable format. So “open formats” were presented:
- ODF – OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications, ISO 26300, for office documents ;
- PDF – Adobe Portable Document Format , ISO 19005-1 , for finalized documents.
