Chess is a strategy game for two players, played on a square board made up of 64 squares. The board is divided into eight ranks and eight files, and the squares alternate between two colors, traditionally light and dark. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.
One player controls the white pieces, while the other controls the black pieces. White always makes the first move, after which the players alternate, moving one piece at a time. The main goal of the game is to attack the opponent’s king in such a way that it has no legal escape. This situation is called checkmate and ends the game with a victory for the player who delivers it.
Although the basic rules of chess can be learned relatively quickly, the game offers an enormous number of possibilities. After only a few moves, many different positions may arise on the board. For this reason, no two games are ever completely alike, and players must constantly make new decisions.
Chess is not a game of chance. It does not use dice, randomly dealt cards, or other elements that directly determine the course of play. Both players can see the entire board and begin with equal forces. The result depends mainly on the quality of their decisions, their attention to the position, and their ability to anticipate the opponent’s moves.
However, chess is not merely a matter of calculation. It also requires logic, imagination, memory, patience, and intuition. The player must combine concrete calculation with a general understanding of the position. Sometimes it is necessary to calculate several moves ahead, while at other times the player must identify a long-term plan.
Chess can also be played in many different settings. It can be enjoyed at home, among friends, with family, in a park, at a club, in a tournament, or online. For some people it is simply a form of relaxation, for others it becomes a passion, and for professional players it is a highly competitive activity.
