Disco icon Gloria Gaynor has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious 2025 Kennedy Center Honors, marking a celebrated recognition of her enduring contribution to music and culture. The announcement comes amid her continued creative resurgence and candid reflections on her extraordinary journey.

At a high-profile event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, President Donald Trump—now chair of the institution—revealed the five artists selected for this year’s honors. Alongside Gloria Gaynor, the honorees include Sylvester Stallone, rock legend KISS, country music star George Strait, and Broadway favorite Michael Crawford. Trump said he was “98 percent involved” in the selection process and will host the awards ceremony in December, scheduled to be broadcast on CBS and available via streaming platforms.

Gaynor’s inclusion notably highlights the profound cultural impact of her landmark anthem, “I Will Survive”—a song that has become emblematic of resilience, inclusivity, and LGBTQ+ pride. Trump lauded the track as “unbelievable.”

A Glimpse Behind the Glory

Earlier this summer, Gaynor took center stage in a deeply personal documentary titled I Will Survive, where she offers a candid look into her life beyond the spotlight. The film touches on her decades-long struggles—ranging from a challenging divorce and financial hardships to health issues. She delivers a sharp critique of the music industry’s often self-centered nature but remains steadfast in her commitment to inclusivity, especially toward her LGBTQ+ fan base. She also openly supports the #MeToo movement as a “necessary and liberating” force.

At 81 years old, Gaynor continues to defy expectations. In an interview with El País SModa, she spoke passionately about maintaining physical and spiritual wellness—practicing CrossFit daily and drawing on her Christian faith as a source of empowerment. Her latest EP, Happy Tears—released on June 6, 2025—is described as a reflection of her enduring joy and personal victory. The EP follows her earlier gospel album and Grammy winner Testimony (2020), underscoring her musical evolution and fervent mission: to inspire hope, love, and faith.
