Snowden within the Russian’s no man’s land, searching for asylum in Iceland! Do you believe it? Do you believe that Russia will let to go this man to nowhere, just for his individual freedom?
I understand that he requested asylum to 19 countries. Do you bet that Snowden will never leave Russia?
In fact, my opinion is that he knew from the beginning which one will be his future country. But he does not wont to go straight there. It was too flashy. He must seem indecisive, helpless, ready to be caught in the clutches of the great bad. In this scenario, Russia does not appear as a country that defends an outcast, but as a savior of fundamental human rights.
Equally likely is that Snowden has been recruited by Russian intelligence and disclosures now is merely the end result of his work as Russian spy. Or maybe he need to gather much more information, but felt that there is a risk to be discovered, in which situation, in the best scenario he ecaped, but all his information would not have had the same credibility for the public.
However, whatever the variant, the information disclosed remains important and with serious repercussions on global politics.
As for EU leaders reactions, the protest are only one way to reassure their people. After all, everyone knew that the U.S. spies globally without discrimination, only that there was no evidence. Or there were no government that had the courage to make them public. Thy receive a bit of information, including the powerful Western countries, to shut them. Israel and UK were the main beneficiaries, and Germany had its share of information too.
Interestingly, Obama’s response to these “annoyances”, was that in fact all nations, including those who protest most strongly against the policy of the U.S. spying, is spying on each other. “I guarantee you that in European capitals, there are people who are interested in, if not what I had for breakfast, at least what my talking points might be should I end up meeting with their leaders. That is how intelligence services operate.“
