Latimeria chalumnae
Latimeria chalumnae, a species of coelacanth (family Latimeriidae).

Ichthyology is the domain of zoology dedicated to  the study of fish. This implies skeletal fish (Osteichthyes), cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes), and jawless fish (Agnatha). About 25,000 fish species exist, including a majority of vertebrates. Though a majority of species have most likely been discovered and described, about 250 new species are officially described by science every single year.

The practice of ichthyology is connected with marine biology, limnology, and oceanography.
