Prince Charles, who now jokes that owns “a piece of Transylvania”, has a portfolio of four properties including a house in Viscri and another one in Zalanpatak.
Charles, who claims to be descended from the Roman ruler Vlad Tepes (known as Dracula, is the origin of a small tourist boom in this beautiful area. Led by Prince Charles, British tourists, cultural entrepreneurs and other people build their homes in abandoned mountain villages in Transylvania.
The Saxons of Transylvania, of German origin, were colonized here in the 12th century to defend the borders of Hungary. In 1918, when the region became part of Romania, many have fled to Austria and Germany, and the exodus continued in the communist regime.
