OpenAI will relax some of ChatGPT’s long-standing content restrictions and permit erotica for age-verified adult users beginning in December 2025, CEO Sam Altman announced on Tuesday, October 14. Altman framed the shift under a principle to “treat adult users like adults,” paired with new age-gating and other safeguards.
According to early briefings and coverage, the change will arrive alongside broader controls that let people dial ChatGPT’s tone and “human-ness” up or down. OpenAI says the policy loosening follows work to better detect and manage mental-health risk in conversations, a key reason the company had kept sexual content off-limits.
The erotica option will be opt-in and restricted to users who pass OpenAI’s adult verification. Teen accounts will remain on a stricter, age-appropriate setting, supported by the company’s developing age-prediction and parental-control systems. The precise boundaries of what counts as allowed erotica versus prohibited content (e.g., non-consensual or illegal acts) have not yet been published.
Tuesday’s announcement marks a notable evolution from OpenAI’s August update on its “Model Spec,” where the company reported public input favored enabling erotica for consenting adults but said it still had “more research and product work to do.” The December rollout suggests that work is nearing completion, though implementation details and regional compliance questions remain.
Why it matters: Opening a verified-adult lane could boost user engagement and subscriptions while intensifying regulatory scrutiny around AI, sexuality, and youth safety. It also aligns OpenAI with a growing market for AI companions and adult storytelling tools that competitors have begun to court.
What’s next: OpenAI is expected to share clearer policy language and product settings ahead of the December launch, including how verification works, what categories of sexual content are permitted, and how creators/app developers can (or cannot) tap the feature through the API. Until then, ChatGPT’s current restrictions remain in effect.
