The XXII Winter Olympic Games will be held in the city of Sochi, Russia during the period February 7 to 23, 2014, but several events will take place in Krasnaya Polyana resort town. There will be 98 sports events from 15 sports. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee.
Sochi was chosen as the host city on July 4, 2007, during the 119th meeting of the IOC in Guatemala, the other two candidates for hosting this edition being Salzburg (Austria) and Pyeongchang (South Korea). Sochi candidacy was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Sharapova. This is the first edition of the Olympic Games held in the Russian Federation since the 1980 Summer Olympics were held in Moscow in the Soviet Union.
Preparations for the Olympic arenas include new building and upgrading telecommunications, energy and transport infrastructure in the area. It will be built also a new Olympic Park on the Black Sea coast Imeretin Valley, with other deployment locations in a central area. Polinaia Krasnaya arenas will also be new arenas.
Preparation of this event gave a few controversies: moving residents, location history, high levels of corruption, environmental pollution and even the treatment of LGBT people.
This will be the first Olympic Games with Thomas Bach as president of the IOC.
