- Introducing new ideas in geometry, including studies related to non-Euclidean geometry
- He was a professor at the University of Bucharest and author of numerous works in the field of mathematics (including higher algebra).
Emanoil Bacaloglu (1830–1891) worked in mathematics, physics and astronomy, teaching in institutions and contributing to the founding of the Society for Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Deac 2010). He was recognized as one of the important personalities of Romanian science in the second half of the 19th century. (Biography.name 2012) Scientifically, he made notable contributions in several fields:
He published works and textbooks that targeted both geometry and algebra or mathematical analysis, contributing to the improvement and modernization of mathematics teaching in Romanian schools. He was concerned with introducing new ideas in geometry, including studies related to non-Euclidean geometry, relatively little known in the Romanian academic environment at the time.
In addition to mathematical research, Bacaloglu also focused on physics, publishing some observations and theories regarding natural phenomena. He showed interest in astronomy, through popularization studies and works that promoted the importance of astronomical and meteorological observations.
He taught at the “Sf. Sava” College in Bucharest and at other educational institutions, having a central role in the training of generations of pupils and students from the end of the 19th century. He campaigned for the organization and development of higher scientific education in the Romanian Principalities, contributing to the spread of modern knowledge of physics, mathematics and astronomy.
He was a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, thereby strengthening relations between Romanian and international researchers. He participated in the establishment of scientific societies and published articles in periodicals of the time, supporting the exchange of ideas in the scientific community.
Through his rich activity in the fields of mathematics, physics and astronomy, as well as his involvement in the teaching and academic spheres, Emanoil Bacaloglu remains a prominent figure in the history of exact sciences in Romania.
