Review: A House of Dynamite (2025)

Kathryn Bigelow’s return to features is a clenched-jaw nail-biter about decision-making under impossible pressure. In under two taut hours, A House of Dynamite follows the U.S. government as it scrambles to identify the source of a single, unattributed nuclear missile and decide how—if at all—to strike back. Bigelow stages the crisis in (mostly) real time, cross-cutting the White House Situation Room, military command centers, and the Oval Office, where a terse, deliberate president (Idris Elba) carries the burden of “the call.”

Missiles

What makes the film crackle is its procedural clarity. Bigelow and writer Noah Oppenheim strip away melodrama in favor of process—how data flows, how authority is delegated, how confirmation bias sneaks in when minutes tick away. The filmmaking is lean and unfussy; every phone ring and keystroke feels like a drum hit in a countdown. The result is a thriller that feels disturbingly plausible without ever turning didactic. (That effect has fueled post-release debate about the film’s politics and even its ending, which some viewers find bracingly honest, others a cop-out.)

Performances are uniformly sharp. Rebecca Ferguson, as Captain Olivia Walker in the Sit Room, gives the film its pulse—calm, incisive, and terrifyingly aware of how little certainty anyone actually has. Elba resists showboating; his president is methodical to the brink of paralysis, which the film frames as both virtue and risk. Around them, Tracy Letts and Jared Harris bring flinty authority that keeps the institutional friction credible rather than caricatured.

Bigelow’s direction is the star. She channels the muscular immediacy of The Hurt Locker and the procedural rigor of Zero Dark Thirty into a clean, propulsive design: crisp blocking in rooms dense with screens; cutting that privileges information flow over spectacle; sound that rises like a pressure wave without ever drowning out the dialogue. The movie’s most unsettling choice is withholding a definitive culprit. That ambiguity widens the frame from whodunit to what-do-we-become—an anxiety Bigelow has discussed openly while framing our era as a metaphorical “house of dynamite.”

If there’s a wobble, it’s in the human texture. Outside of Walker and the president, character lives feel sketched—perhaps intentionally, to emphasize the machine of state—but a touch more specificity might have deepened the moral aftershocks. A few critics have also dinged the presidential subplot as the film’s soft spot; I wouldn’t go that far, though the thread can feel schematic beside the electric Sit Room sequences.

Bottom line: A House of Dynamite is a major return for Bigelow—an exacting, nerve-shredding procedural that makes nuclear brinkmanship feel horrifyingly close to the bone. It’s less a whodunit than a how-we-decide, and it lingers. 4.5/5.
