A wiki engine is a software family of content management systems to achieve wikis.

Basic features

None of these features is necessarily present in a wiki engine, but these features are directly related to the wiki principle.

  • Possibility for each person, without exception, to create and edit each page;

  • Whether or not to be identified;

  • Obligation or not to be identified in order to edit a page;

  • History management pages, limited in time or full since the establishment of the page;

  • Ability to include or not HTML code in pages;

  • More or less rich syntax of language associated with the motor.

Advanced features

In addition to these features, wiki engines can implement or not advanced features, approaching classical portals.

  • Plugins management;

  • Calendar management;

  • Forums management;

  • Photo albums management;

  • Discussion area management;

  • Information management;

  • Content syndication between different wikis.
