José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Leonard Orban, Member of the EC in charge of Multilingualism, opened on 20/04/2009 in Brussels, a conference on Literary Translation and Culture, to extend the discussions on literary translation to a wider public of language professionals. The conference convened around 120 stakeholders, translators, professionals, authors, publishers, academics and literary critics as well as theatre, cinema and music professionals, to discuss the issue of literary translation in all its aspects. In recent decades, translation has grown in importance thanks to another factor as well: the multilingual nature of the European project. EU multilingual policies include the promotion of language learning. Leornard Orban and Jordi Savall, Catalan Viol Playor and Ambassador of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, gave a joint press conference after the conference.
