Google+ (also, Google Plus, often abbreviated G+) is the application of social network of US-based Google launched June 28, 2011, and available for almost 90 days by invitation, before being made available to the public on 20 September 2011. It is presented by many media outlets as a product to compete with Facebook.

Google+ is the second largest social network in the world, surpassing Twitter in January 2013. Google+ users can view updates from their contacts with circles through the “Stream”, which is similar to the “news feed “Facebook. The input box allows users to upgrade to the states or use icons to upload and share photos and videos.

In December 2011, there were more than 60 million users. End of January 2012, Google has passed the 90 million users. However in February 2012, two studies show that the average time spent by each user of the social network is small compared to Facebook (a little more than 3 minutes per month for Google+ against more than 6 hours for Facebook) and even he decreased until December 2011; data from these studies were criticized as “particularly undervalued” by Google.

Application

Google+ has been available since its launch on June 28, 2011 on Google Play for all owners of a smartphone running an Android version 2.1 or higher. The application already had more than 500,000 downloads on July 5, and July 13 the application was in the Unit 1 000 000 – 5000 000. In early January, the application was in the range 5000000 – 10 million (for comparison, GMail is between 100 000 000 – 500 000 000 applications installed). In September 2012, it was in the range 50 000 000 – 100 000 000.

An application on iOS has also been developed. Since July 20, 2011, it is now possible to download the application.

Reactions

Overall, the trade press was rather excited about the arrival of a new player in social networks, especially in view of the credibility of Google. Thus, among others, the geek Journal said is quite “optimistic”.

Some observers believe that “Google+ is not a social network, i.e. having friends or follow people is an accidental outgrowth only of its true purpose: to be an invisible wall between you and the web, a wall that sees what you do, saves and stores it for future use.”
