New online service brings dictionary definitions, synonyms, antonyms, etymology, encyclopedia results, web search and prompt-building tools together in one place
BUCHAREST, Romania — August 12, 2026 — Dictionaries.ro, a new free online search and reference platform, has officially launched, offering users a simple way to explore words, meanings, related concepts and general knowledge without having to move constantly between multiple websites.
Designed as a lightweight and accessible web application, Dictionaries.ro combines several types of search and reference tools in a single interface. Users can enter a word, phrase or question and choose between automatic search, dictionary results, encyclopedia information, web search and a built-in Prompt Builder.
The platform’s Dictionary functionality can display definitions, pronunciation information, synonyms, antonyms, etymology and related words directly on Dictionaries.ro. Rather than serving merely as a collection of links, the website is designed to present useful information within its own interface whenever the underlying public resources allow it.
An Auto mode helps determine the most appropriate type of search based on the user’s query. A single English word, for example, can be treated as a dictionary lookup, while broader expressions, names and concepts can be redirected automatically toward encyclopedia results.
For users who want to explore a term in greater depth, Dictionaries.ro also provides dedicated tools for Definition, Synonyms, Antonyms, Etymology and Wikipedia, along with suggestions for related words and possible spelling corrections.
The Encyclopedia section integrates information from Wikipedia through the MediaWiki API, allowing summaries and related results to be displayed directly on the website. A dedicated Web section uses Google Programmable Search Engine to search selected dictionary and reference resources and display Google search results within Dictionaries.ro.
The website also includes a Prompt Builder, which transforms a simple question or idea into a more structured prompt suitable for use with artificial intelligence systems. This feature operates locally in the browser and does not require a paid AI API.
Dictionaries.ro has been developed around the principle of keeping the service free and easy to use. Its core functions rely on freely available public resources and APIs, including Free Dictionary API, Datamuse, Wiktionary, Wikipedia and Google Programmable Search.
No user account is required. The platform does not depend on a local database for its search functionality, and recent searches can be stored locally in the visitor’s browser rather than on the website’s server.
The interface is available in English and Romanian, while the main dictionary functionality currently focuses primarily on English-language terms. When the Romanian interface is selected, encyclopedia searches can use Romanian Wikipedia.
The visual design of Dictionaries.ro follows a minimalist, editorial approach inspired by modern reference works. Definitions are presented in a clean reading format, with clear typographic hierarchy, pronunciation controls, related terms, source information and optional links for further exploration.
Searches can also generate shareable URLs, allowing individual queries or specific tools such as etymology searches to be bookmarked or shared with others.
The launch of Dictionaries.ro reflects a broader objective: to create a useful entry point for people who want to understand a word, investigate a concept, verify terminology or formulate a better question without opening multiple separate services.
Dictionaries.ro is available free of charge at dictionaries.ro.
