Killing Time: Hades II Casts a Mightier Spell

Hades II isn’t just “more Hades”—it’s a sharper, stranger, and more confident roguelike that wears its witchcraft on its sleeve. You play Melinoë, Zagreus’s sister, a hex-slinging witch who sets out to literally kill Time by dethroning the Titan Chronos. The premise sounds pulpy; the execution is anything but. Supergiant’s trademark fusion of kinetic combat, character-driven storytelling, and immaculate presentation returns at full force—and, crucially, it finds new gears.

Combat and Buildcraft

The original Hades felt like a fencing match; Hades II is a duel and a ritual. Melinoë’s incantations and spellcraft layer on top of quick melee strings and dodges, encouraging you to weave in sigils, curses, and mana-gated bursts. The expanded arsenal and a broader spread of boons let you sculpt wildly different runs—fragile glass-cannon storm witch one night, trap-happy control mage the next. It’s still brisk and readable in the chaos, yet more expressive than before. The late-game difficulty modifiers push builds to the brink without feeling cheap, and the sequel’s two major routes through the world keep runs from blurring together.

Progression and Structure

Supergiant smartly doubles down on between-run storytelling. The coven vibes around your hub, resource gathering for rituals, and light-touch management loops are sticky without becoming chores. Dialogue density is high and—like the first game—rarely repeats in a way that breaks the spell. If you bounced off the first Hades because its meta-progression felt thin, Hades II’s layered unlocks, rituals, and post-game knobs should land better. If you adored the first, this is the richer stew you hoped for.

Art, Music, and Voice

Jen Zee’s art direction somehow gets bolder—inky shadows, lunar blues, and shimmering particle work make every arena pop. Darren Korb’s score shifts from dirty bass licks to operatic swells as if the soundtrack itself is casting a spell. VO is excellent across the pantheon; even bit players crackle with personality. Presentation was never the question with Supergiant, and here it’s a resounding flex.

Story and Themes

Where Hades was an intimate family drama, Hades II widens its gaze. It’s about resistance and solidarity—witches, gods, and misfits pooling power against inevitability. The script balances warmth and bite, turning Greek myth into something modern without winking too hard. The central metaphor—battling Time—gives both plot and mechanics a unifying pulse.

Performance and Platforms

The 1.0 launch (September 25, 2025) arrives polished, with quality-of-life perks and smooth performance on PC and Switch. PC stability was rock-solid in my time, and the portable experience holds up well for quick, “one more run” loops.

Rough Edges

A couple of nitpicks: the early meta can feel front-loaded with systems before you’ve internalized the new spell economy; a handful of rooms skew busy with hazards until certain boons click. And if you were hoping for a wholesale reinvention, this is evolution, not revolution—by design.

Verdict

Hades II is a stellar sequel—bigger and braver without losing the tight loop that made its predecessor sing. It invites tinkering, rewards mastery, and wraps it all in a world you’ll want to linger in long after the credits. If the original set the bar for action-roguelikes, this one sidles up and raises it.
