Authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University earlier this week, officials said. Robinson was taken into custody after a manhunt that stretched more than a day; his family contacted authorities after recognizing him in surveillance images released by investigators, according to Utah officials.
Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder and related firearms offenses, and he is being held without bail in Utah County, the Associated Press reported. Investigators allege Robinson acted alone. A possible motive remains under investigation.
Kirk, a prominent media figure and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot Wednesday while addressing a crowd on campus. Preliminary findings indicate the attack was carried out from a rooftop vantage point with a bolt-action rifle, according to reporting based on law-enforcement briefings.
Officials say tips from people close to Robinson, including a family member, were pivotal to the arrest. Surveillance footage released by investigators placed a suspect on and around campus before and after the shooting. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation as they continue gathering evidence.
News of the arrest drew swift national attention. President Donald Trump announced on television that a suspect was in custody and condemned the killing as a “heinous assassination.” Public officials across the political spectrum likewise denounced the shooting. Court dates and additional charging details are expected to be announced by Utah authorities.
