* This is the administrative court responsible for Sofia Province (област), as opposed to Sofia City. There are no provincial (окръжни) administrative courts in the judicial hierarchy.

** Окръг is a judicial province, област an administrative province. They do not coincide geographically.

*** The Sofia City Court is responsible for the city of Sofia (as opposed to the province with the same name) but has the status of a provincial court.

Referring to subdivisions of acts

In Bulgarian legal references the following terminology is preferred:

Examples:

‘Чл. 12, ал. 2, т. 3 пр. 1’ should be translated as ‘Article 12(2)(3), first option’.

‘§ 22. В чл. 63, ал. 1, т. 3 се отменя’ becomes ‘§ 22. Article 63(1)(3) is repealed’.

§ or section

The ‘§’-sign is used in final and transitional provisions instead of ‘член’. It stands for ‘параграф’. Translate it using the ‘§’-sign wherever possible to facilitate references to the original legislation. If this is not possible, use ‘section’.

Option

To clarify what is meant by ‘option’, here is an example:

The investigation concerns several public officials suspected of having committed, between early 2009 and June 2011, offences under Article 282(2), first option, in conjunction with Article 282(1) and Article 20(2) of the Criminal Code (NK).

Article 282(2) NK reads as follows. Options 1 and 2 have been placed in square brackets:

Ако [от деянието са настъпили значителни вредни последици] или [е извършено от лице, което заема отговорно служебно положение], наказанието е лишаване от свобода от една до осем години, като съдът може да постанови и лишаване от правото по чл. 37, ал. 1, точка 6.
