Cities

Be aware that Hungarian texts will nearly always use the Hungarian names for places in Slovakia, referring to Bratislava as Pozsony, Trnava as Nagyszombat or Košice as Kassa. Similarly, German texts may use the German names, referring to Bratislava as Pressburg, Trnava as Tyrnau or Košice as Kaschau. Always use the Slovak names when writing in English.

For statistical and Structural Fund purposes Slovakia is divided into 4 areas (oblasti – NUTS 2), each consisting of either a single region (kraj – NUTS 3) or a group of regions (zoskupenie krajov). Administratively the country is divided into 8 self-governing regions (samosprávne kraje — NUTS 3 higher territorial units — vyššie územné celky (VÚC)). Below that, there are 79 okresy (districts).
