Societatea informaţională

societatea informationalaO societate informaţională este o societate în care crearea, distribuţia, folosirea, integrarea şi manipularea informaţiei este o activitate economică, politică şi culturală semnificativă. Economia cunoaşterii este componenta sa economică în care bunăstarea este creată prin exploatarea economică a înţelegerii. Participanţii la aceast tip de societate sunt denumiţi uneori cetăţeni digitali.

Specific acestui tip de societate este poziţia centrală pe care o deţine tehnologia informaţiei în producţie, economie, şi societate în ansamblul său. Societatea informaţională este văzută ca succesoarea societăţii industriale. Concepte strâns legate de aceasta sunt societatea post-industrială (Daniel Bell), societatea post-fordistă, post-modernă, societatea cunoaşterii, societatea telematică, revoluţia informaţională, şi societatea reţelelor (Manuel Castells).
